Where do you book a Gulf-view anniversary dinner on the west end of 30A now? Until September 14, you could call Vue on 30a in Dune Allen. That day, Santa Rosa Golf & Beach Club announced the restaurant had closed permanently. Many people will read that as a building coming down. The bigger change is about access. The building on that site will be replaced. Club members are still discussing whether the replacement will seat the public the way Vue did.
What the Club Said on September 14
According to the club, water intrusion and indoor air quality problems turned up in the building during routine maintenance. Outside professionals did a full assessment and confirmed the conditions affected parts of the building. The club said the problems could be fixed. The fix would take a significant investment and a long timeline, though. The building was already slated for replacement under the club's long-range master plan, so the Board of Directors closed Vue for good instead of putting money into an aging structure.
"Vue has been so much more than a restaurant. It has been part of the fabric of this Club and this community for generations," said Steve O'Brien, president of the club's board. 30A TV quoted more of his statement, calling the closure "a bittersweet moment for our membership and the local community."
30A TV also reported that all upcoming public reservations, private parties, and scheduled events at Vue were canceled. Club management is contacting affected guests and event hosts directly about refunds and other arrangements. If you had a fall booking there and haven't heard from anyone, the club's news portal is where it says updates will go.
That mention of "public reservations" matters. Vue sat inside a member-owned club that 30A TV describes as semi-private, with a private beach club, and it still took bookings from the public. Over the years it won "Best Fine Dining" from Visit South Walton and was named a "Most Booked" restaurant on OpenTable. One commenter on Get The Coast's story said their rehearsal dinner was held there in 1992.
Fifty-Five Years in Five Dates
The club's own history shows how long this room has been part of Dune Allen:
- 1967. Five military officers and business leaders meet to talk about creating a golf and beach club in Dune Allen.
- July 1971. The Beach Club House is completed. The original nine-hole course opens the next month.
- June 1997. The Beach Club reopens after a six-month renovation.
- January 2011. After another round of renovations, the Beach Club is renamed Vue on 30a.
- September 14, 2026. The club announces the permanent closure.
The Replacement Was on Paper Years Before the Leak
The closure came suddenly. The plan to replace the building did not. In February 2022, club records put a Vue renovation six to eight years out. In July 2022, the board approved $15,000 in preliminary architectural and engineering fees to study a major remodel. In October 2024, the board saw concept drawings that included a possible second story on the terrace and a one-story Beach Club in place of the earlier two-story version. The minutes say no decision was made.
The process picked up speed in 2026. In an April 30 update to members, the Planning Committee said the architecture firm Meyers + Associates was drafting early concepts for Vue, the Beach Club, and the facilities around them. The studies were also checking what's possible "from both a design and regulatory standpoint" and what fits the club's finances. A members-only town hall on July 16 promised three concept designs from architect Chris Meyers and his team. At an August 25 session, the firm presented one refined concept based on member feedback. The club called it "not yet the final Renovation Plan" and said the board would share cost estimates and possible ways to fund the project.
The water problems turned that timeline into a closure. The planning was already well underway. What isn't finished is the decision about who the new building will serve.
The Question Members Haven't Settled
Here is how the April letter described the open question:
"We also heard thoughtful perspectives on topics such as public versus member access and the balance between renovation and new construction. As expected, there is a range of viewpoints and the Committee is carefully considering these as part of a broader, long-term strategy."
The same letter said members kept stressing dining, outdoor gathering space, and room to spend time with family and friends at the club. Those priorities describe a better club. They don't say whether a non-member will be able to book a table there in the future. As of today, no public source has answered that.
A few other things are also unsettled. 30A TV described the project as a full demolition and replacement. The club's posted closure message says only that the building was slated for replacement. No public drawings, budget, or construction schedule have been released. The only Walton County file found for the property is about a 488-square-foot pool-deck addition, not a new beachfront building. Comments under the news stories mention a member vote and a two-year closure. Nobody has confirmed either.
The next confirmed date is October 20, 2026. The club calendar lists a members-only "Final Master Plan Town Hall" that morning from 10 a.m. to noon. It's a meeting, not a groundbreaking, but it's the first point where the access question could get an answer. The same calendar still shows recurring "Members Night at Vue" dates in October. Those entries are left over from before the closure and don't mean the restaurant reopened.
Where a Gulf-View Dinner Is Now
For now, the closure changes how you plan a special dinner along west 30A. We checked three nearby places that are open to the public, serve dinner, and sit on or close to the beach. None of them takes reservations.
| Restaurant | Address | The view | Reservations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fish Out of Water at WaterColor Inn | 34 Goldenrod Circle | Gulf-front, Gulf and sunset views | None, first come, first served |
| Shunk Gulley Oyster Bar | 1875 S. Hwy 393, Gulf Place | Across from the Gulf, views from both levels | None |
| Chiringo | 63 Hotz Ave, Grayton Beach | About 200 feet from the coast, upstairs dining room with views | Walk-ins only |
Fish Out of Water is the closest match to what Vue offered, a dining room right on the Gulf. Louis Martorano became Director of Culinary and Executive Chef in January 2025 and brought a new seasonal menu. WaterColor's seasonal schedule lists Fall Break hours for October 1 through 31 of 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends. October is also the month of the 10th Harvest Wine & Food Festival at WaterColor Inn & Resort, which runs October 15 to 18.
Shunk Gulley is the Gulf Place option. In 2026 it won Best Grouper Sandwich, and its Tripadvisor Travelers' Choice award marked a sixth straight year in the top 10% worldwide, according to the restaurant.
At Chiringo, the views are from the upstairs room. Last seating is 8:45 p.m. and the kitchen takes its last orders at 9 p.m. 30A.com's June 2026 Grayton guide still recommends sitting on the rooftop.
Planning a birthday, an anniversary, or a dinner for visiting family looks different without reservations. Your table depends on when you show up, not on a call made a week ahead. Getting there before sunset is the closest thing to a booking any of these places offers. Posted hours change with the season, so check each restaurant directly before you go.
The October 20 town hall is the next point where the club's members could decide whether the new building on Vue's site takes public reservations again.
I've lived along this coast since 1975 and watched places like Vue become part of how this community marks its big occasions.
